How to Reduce Equipment Downtime: 8 Proven Strategies

Unplanned equipment downtime is one of the most expensive problems in any maintenance-dependent operation. Every hour a critical machine is down, production is lost, deadlines are missed, and costs mount. Here are eight strategies maintenance managers use to reduce it.

1. Build a Structured Preventive Maintenance Program

The single most effective way to reduce unplanned downtime is to stop waiting for equipment to fail before you act. A structured preventive maintenance program — with defined schedules, clear responsibilities, and automatic work order generation — addresses wear and potential failures before they turn into breakdowns.
